defcons_treklit„Sir Apropos of Nothing, Book Two : The Woad to Wuin“
A good novel.
Although I think the first volume was a tad better, nonetheless “The Woad to Wuin” is a good and interesting read. It’s obviously darker than it’s predecessor, where SAoN was rather light and a “fun” read, this one is much more thoughtfully in my opinion. Don’t understand me wrong. it (nearly) never loses its humorous undertone, but it’s much more philosophical so to speak. To see the evolution of “good old” Apropos to a fearless warlord and back to his normal self is one hell of a journey and shows the shaky line between “good” and “evil”. Although he never would say or believe it himself in the deepest corner of his heart Apropos is a good guy, although for the most part of the novel his dark side runs the show in the end he makes the hard decision to not become Hecate’s “partner”, but to give mankind the chance to dictate its own destiny without direct influence by the gods.
Concerning the writing style its the old Peter David dilemma. I’m sure most (if not everyone) of the people who like his other works, will like this one , too, but I’m equally sure that many people who haven’t liked his style before will have their problem with the SAoN series, too. Nonetheless I would urge them to try it, because if they’re able to overcome the doubts a very deserving reward awaits them : several hours of reading pleasure.
In my experience this time the supporting characters have less space than in SAoN, but Apropos character gets a lot of development in the novel, and I don’t mean the changes produced by the Eye, in my opinion we have a wiser Apropos in the end of the novel, than we had in the beginning. Like I said before the supporting characters have rather minor roles, but nonetheless they both have their own story and help in presenting Apropos’ journey.
Overall a high-quality read and a worthy continuation of “Sir Apropos of Nothing”.
