defcons_treklitAn acceptable short-novel.
Unjoined has some very good groundwork, but for my taste the execution is a little bit to superficial to make this an outstanding story. For example, the whole rebelling group, extremist and non-extremists alike, has nearly no background at all, they are just a threat, whose motives and desires stay to much in the shadows. The way they are represented here they are nothing more than an alibi enemy to have some action elements in the story, and that’s especially saddening, because I think there was a lot more potential in this part of the story than the authors were able to use. A part of the story which rescued it is Ezri’s voyage to the Annuated, because it gives both this story and the whole parasite arc some more depth. That they (the parasites) are a failed experiment to strengthen the symbionts against a disease and so mad about the Trills because of a tried genocide against them, makes their ongoing, almost obsessed hate against the Trill society so much more convincing and believable. One plot point I have to say I wasn’t so exited about is the whole Ezri/Bashir breakup, but that’s mainly because I never saw it has extremely interesting. Granted, there were some nice moments during the series, but I don’t think it will have a big impact on the series if the two are together or not.
The characterizations are good to very good, I particularly liked the scenes with Dax and Cyl. One character I would have liked to have more involvement is Gard, who I think is the most interesting of all the Trill and of whom I hope that he will continue to appear in the series. Keru’s appearance may be a nice little piece of continuity for some, but his being there wasn’t really necessary in my opinion, and therefore it came across a little bit forced that one of the authors’ former characters makes an appearance in this story.
Overall the story is decent, but it had potential to become more than that.
