A decent short novel.
I must admit that at first the story doesn’t really felt like a Ferengi story to me, but during the story it gets into the Ferengi groove. One thing that saddened me was the mental condition of the former Grand Nagus Zek, I like the character and to see him like that is a blow. The conspiracy against Rom is a little bit cheap if you keep in mind how mighty people are involved. Since the only real powerful point against him is a forged contract, there coup d’etat seems a bit abrupt. Granted, it is said that this was Krax plan to weaken the opposition, but I doubt that the conspirators would go in without a Plan B, even with such a “good” argument. The part about Leeta’s difficult pregnancy was a little bit short for my taste, one or two additional chapters about her and maybe her strained relationship to Ishka would have been nice. The Ro/Quark breakup at the end came out of nowhere, just when you think they finally would find together they agree to be just friends, but there’s still some potential beteen the two, the chemistry is just there.
The characterizations are good for the most part, but like I said before I had my problems in the beginning. I especially mean the meeting in Quark’s Bar, it felt a little bit tame for a Ferengi only meeting in my opinion and I don’t know if Ferengi would quote the Rules to each other, since in the end they all should know them as good as their own name . The best character work was done for Rom, the mix of the business idiot, and the passionate man hits on the mark. And although I don’t like Zek’s condition, his characterization is excellent, too.
All in all a fairly good read. It’s maybe not quite Keith R.A. DeCandido at his best, but still enjoyable.
