An absolutely boring novel.
The author wasn’t able to create at least one interesting chapter, since the whole novel is full of old, overused plot elements and one dimensional characters. “Tooth and Claw” is one of the rather bad interpretations of the long known “alien dignity thinks he/she is the greatest, but is taught by Starfleet to behave like a good leader” theme. If done right even this unoriginal premise could be used to write an at least slightly interesting novel, but here it is just the basic plot without showing even anything resembling creativity. And that is true not only for the “Riker on the hunt” part of the novel, but also for the Picard centered part.
The characterization is totally in line with the bad storytelling, all the characters, but especially the original ones, are one dimensional and totally colorless. You can find some scenes with adequate characterizations for the known characters here and there, but for the most parts they fell absolutely flat, too.
I seldom have seen a novel which was as predictable as this one and based on this it’s a good thing Doranna Durgin has written only one Star Trek novel.
