A good book.

But it has one problem for my taste : It is a little bit to patchy. It’s more a series of events than a novel in the traditional sense. Although there are bridging elements, I missed some kind of flow throughout the book. One point in the novel I haven’t figured out yet is, if President Bacco is really any better than Zife and Azernal. If the Remans really attacked the outpost and were killed, President Bacco should thank them, because this was the best possible outcome for her and the Federation government. Granted, they got some trouble from the press, but they had the Klingons and Romulans out of the way. But what’s more likely is that the “attack” was only a cover up for the shuttle plan they talked about. Even the three dead people (if they exist) could be Starfleet Intelligence Agents who died on recent Top Secret missions and were used here as alibi victims. And these are tactics not so different from her predecessor’s government, just on a minor level. And if you have done the first steps into these kind of affairs, the way isn’t so far to a new Tezwa, especially if Section 31 knows about it and no has something to blackmail the Federation president. But the glimpses you get of the work of the Federation government are interesting and the characters are well worked out and interesting, too.

Overall a nice look on the workings of politics in the Star Trek universe and a hopefully not the last trip into this part of the Federation.
