"The Buried Age" is a good novel, but not on par with Bennett's previous excursions into the novel length area. One of the main problems I had with the novel was Picard's characterization. Somehow I have problems picturing this book's Picard as the "missing Link" between Stargazer-Picard (as seen in MJF Stargazer stories) and Farpoint-Picard. Granted, most of Friedman's Stargazer stories happened early on in his stint as the Gazer's captain and a lot of time has passed by between "Maker" and the destruction of the ship, but I still had a vaguely off-feeling when reading this book's Picard. Another thing which bothered me more in this book than in his previous works was the lecturing mode and descriptiveness Mr. Bennett tends to use in his works. Normally I don't mind and even appreciate it sometimes, but here it bothered me at one or two occasions. That the novel received a good rating nonetheless is a testament to Bennett's talent for writing, despite my above mentioned problems with this novel I still was able to have a good time reading this latest entry in the Lost Era series.
