„Traitor Winds“ * L.A. Graf

An O.K. novel.

Although the whole conspiracy against the Enterprise-Crew appears a little bit to constructed, and there are some coincidental events to much in then novel it is an acceptable read. One example for strange coincidently events : Sulu, Chekov and Uhura meet for diner in a restaurant, they meet the Doctors McCoy and Piper (they could go to every restaurant on earth and both groups independently chose the same restaurant), Piper is searching for a security man with starship experience and if possible with knowledge about intervaller technology for his project, and what a surprise : Chekov fits perfectly. Piper thinks (rightfully so) there is a traitor in his lab, and hey, who is the traitors partner ? A fellow cadet of Chekov, accidentally his academy nemesis, who is bullying him around all the time. And this is just one example, there are others. But to come to the positive things : Although the “big Three” are only playing a minor (Kirk and McCoy) or no (Spock) role and the normally “supporting” characters Chekov, Sulu and Uhura are the ones carrying the story, it’s working satisfactory. The characterizations of the known characters are good, but the new ones, especially the bad guys remain somewhat one-dimensional. The actions of Kang at the end appeared, at least for me, a little bit unlikely for a Klingon of this era.

All in all an acceptable novel to kill some time, especially if you can ignore all the “lucky” coincidences.
